Today most of the software applications are used web based applications. So to test any web based application first we need to test the application. Once the application is developed to test/check the all test cases on that application.Coming to our question is  Tool right ? So here is the Testing tool ans is : Automation Testing to convert  all manual test cases into test scripts by using some tool like(Selenium, WatiN, Watir, Sahi, QTP, SilkTest,  Soap Test and Soapui, etc etc.. ) is automation testing.

* First of all any company can easily implement start work with Selenium, without having to purchase anything. 
* Selenium is "Opensource Automation Testing Tool". It is greate used to test Webbased and mobile web applications. We  can use SIKULI as a software for Selenium. SIKULI is an opensource automation tool developed on Java. After install sikuli with Selenium it is support Desktop, Flex and Flash objects.. 
* We can write selenium scripts in all programming languages like JAVA, PHP, PYTHON, PERL, RUBY, HTML and C#. 
* Selenium supports Linux,Windows, Mac and Solaris machines and also used to test Android, i phone and Windows mobile based applications.

It support browser is  Internet-explorer and Firefox. :-( :-(

We can automate Web base and Desktop based applications. :-) :-)

If you are looking for a best career opportunity - you should learn both. As others have clearly mentioned in their answers, you would need one of these tools depending on the application under test (AUT). Lets assume you choose Selenium as the opportunity and learn it. There is no guarantee that you will always get a web based project to use selenium. Same holds true for QTP as well.There are number of applications that cannot be tested using both these tools as well. API validation would be a good example of that.

So learn all the available tools, and dont be tied down by a particular tool.

Selenium has lot of advantages over QTP. 

1. Source control CVS,SVN,GIT etc are possible in Selenium. You can integrate that to your existing repository or build tool. Continuous integration would be easier too. 
2. You will coding in real programming language. Learning that may be useful to do other things such as Jmeter etc. 
3. You can modify the Selenium code and create new functionalities if needed.  
4. You can use methods such as BDD to write the tests. Story based testing is also an option. 
5. Open source community to help and debug.
